it's a shame that so many have the luxury of saving ... so as to forget/ignore that others do not (realistically) have that choice.

(5,106 posts)very Republican community where my mom was one of the few active Democrats (welcoming JFK when he passed through in his campaign), I can remember when there were "good" Republicans. They were complicit in cooperative government, and were used to working things out. Today, potential Republican candidates are being destroyed if cooperative. Bill Clinton ran into enough problems and became a major disappointment to me. Barack Obama, for whom I actively worked, has finished me off, politically. The Republicans are obviously controlling the system...or WAIT!... the powers that be are playing us in a way I could swear was not the case fifty years ago.

(54,378 posts)I do not need a flat screen TV in every room of the house, a new car every two years, a new house (at all), or the penthouse suite at the Pierre every time I'm in New York City, and I wouldn't buy all that stuff even if I could.
On the other hand, we try to buy stuff we do need (food, household stuff when it falls apart) and want (vacations when we can find the time), and we try to buy from local merchants--wherever we are--rather than national chains, even when we know we'll probably be paying more, as that maximizes the multiplier effect. Obviously, we have the luxury of being able to do that, but it's our decision to do so. Spread the wealth, lessen the pain, so to speak.
