High school football player body slams security guard

This is from WXYZ-TV's Thursday night news. A grainy cell phone video of a security guard being body-slammed by Jayru Campbell, a Cass Technical High School student who made a commitment to play football at Michigan State University, has been making the rounds on the Detroit and Lansing TV news and even the national sports media.

Reportedly, the security guard (who works for a private firm that contracts with Detroit Public Schools) warned Campbell that Campbell was violating the school dress code by wearing a hood. That is allegedly the incident that led the Campbell assaulting the guard.

These high school gifted athletes are so cuddled and glorified by the students and local media that they think they can get away with everything. If that the kids' attitude, I wonder how many of his fellows students he's bullied and beaten up?

Yes… very stupid move. Let's see what really happened here before running with a bunch of "background" and interviews.

I hate the local fucking news for sensationalization of this.

He may still be a child, but wanting to and actually doing are very different for anyone, take your apologetic logic a little further, and who hasn't wanted to kill someone? This boy did a very violent, criminal, and yes stupid, thing and must face appropriate consequences. How much this interrupts his football career is moot.

the Abuser deserves the most sympathy in the media. they did it in Ohio, On CNN when they were discussing the rape charges for the Football players they had this, poor football players attitude.

And now they are doing it with this boy. My question is how disrespectful do you have to be to even consider body slamming an adult?

I don't feel bad for him, I feel bad for the people who work in that school who have to be around children capable of that level of violence.

He should fit right in, until he gets arrested for something serious that is.

I guess it comes with the territory. It's not like tennis, or basketball, where "no contact" is the rule. These young men are actually focused on "body slamming" their opponents. Face up to it, it's a violet sport, and it's LOADED with young men who would LOVE to hit hard!

Bummer for this lad, because he was just a wee bit too pumped with his testosterone for his own good. Might have squashed his chances. But there are THOUSANDS of others in line, waiting to get the chance. Not the end of the world for football, but might very well be the end of the world for this lad's chances to make a name for himself in the sport.

I've been of this mind for quite some time.

When I was in high school (late 1960s) I was the pole vaulter on my high-school track team. During my junior year, I advanced to "varsity." I was the sole varsity vaulter and I was mediocre at best.

My highest was 11'6"; I could never quite get over 12'. Varsity pole vaulters at competing high schools were doing at least 12', 12'6". Some where clearing 13' and higher. During the season, I took one first, a couple of seconds, and all the rest thirds. When I "did well" it was because the competing vaulters had a bad day. In essence, I was as good as they were bad!

My upper body strength was okay, but I didn't have the speed. I began to realize that there must have been a dozen guys at my high school who were faster and more agile, but simply didn't go out for track and field. I did, so there I was..."Mr. Varsity Pole Vaulter."

But I began to realize that this phenomena transcended sports to include the arts, politics, scholarship, or all human endeavors. For every celebrity who entertains us, for every athlete who excites us, for every public official who leads us, for every "bright mind" who fascinates us, there are countless others who can do it as well if not better. But they simply didn't "go out." It might be because of ambition, or knowledge, or luck, or contacts, or time, or being at the right place at the right time, or any one of a number of "-isms", or whatever, they didn't "make the team." I'm truly convinced our "leaders" in all aspects of human endeavors simply aren't the "best and brightest" and I wonder what kind of world we would have now if they were truly were.

I've been to music concerts where the warm-up group was 10-100X's better than the main attraction. My son went to the Blues Festival a few years back, and he got a chance to see Santana. But he told me, "Dad, there were players and groups that were far better!"

When I see losers like michelle bachmann run against a democratic opponent, I can hardly support the democrat. When rand paul ran, his opponent was terrible. I am not sure I would have voted for him. Of course I would have, but not to vote FOR him, but to vote AGAINST paul.

You are right on. We are fortunate to have some clear minds, honest hearts, and decent people in politics today; but far too few. Why we have Schumers, Menendez's, and tens of others that aren't worth their weight in salt. Disgusting; but it's better than the teabagger opponents that climb out of the sewers.

Heard a tale one time of a man goes up to heaven and asks St Peter, "Who was the most gifted saxaphone (or whatever) that passed the pearly gates;" and St. Peter responded with a name he had never heard before. When he inquired as to why he hadn't heard of him/her, St. Peter told him that this person had the ability, the gift - but never had the chance or took the opportunity to pursue it.

It's so true!

13. I'm confused why the security guard started the fight by grabbing him over a trivial violation
Sun Jan 26, 2014, 06:47 PM
Jan 2014

I'm also confused why....
DPS uses private contractors instead of hiring their own security guards?
They chose a shirtless pics for the article?
They chose to use the video where you can't see anything instead of the one where it is apparent that the guard is the aggressor.
