in the past has more/less been defined as choices between guns or butter...this

challenge of preserving Ecuador's natural habitat and not drilling for the oil in that habitat - it requires a new definition of national security and global security for that matter....While preserving that habitat won't solve the climate change problem, it is a first step in a long journey toward changing the global economic system that prizes immediate profits by sacrificing humanity's future. It would be the beginning envisioning and establishing a post-petroleum economy.

As I heard the cost to be paid to Ecuador is less than $3 Billion....

What is the price vis a vis what is already spent on national security? Considering what the US alone spent to mitigate the damages of Hurricane Katrina, Hurricane Irene, this price is cheap....Also consider that this is only a fraction of the US military's budget of $549 billion for military programs which excludes war costs.
