Leonardo DiCaprio (UN Messenger of Peace) at the opening of Climate Summit 2014
Here's a lot of science to ease your mind. Here's some success stories to also ease your mind. And if you could remind everyone else that ignoring things doesn't make them go away, we'll owe you one.

(3,212 posts)Sell a few of his mansions (just one of them is over 7,000 square feet), and more people might listen, but the cause is, obviously, not important enough to him to make some personal sacrifices.
When people like him actually LEAD the way, more people will follow.
He also rented the fifth largest yacht in the world to attend the World Cup. I'm sure that runs on solar energy.

(65 posts)Yeah, We shouldn't listen to anyone unless they are naked, living in a tree eating wheat grass. That's the ticket. Any of you bozos have a comment about what he was saying? The gist is that the collective powers of the world are not taking climate change seriously. Like some of the commenters here. Life as we know it will disappear within this century. (or sooner as projections continually are getting shortened) The dude took the time, dressed up and made an appeal that was entirely appropriate for the venue and the times that we are living - or what's left to live. He should be lauded.

(3,212 posts)Kinda' like the drunk lecturing his kid on the misuse of alcohol.
Or preacher man preaching about the evils of adultery while doing the church secretary.
But he drives a Prius to his chartered jet.
Yeah. Right.
He is preaching to the already converted. Others won't take him seriously.

(65 posts)...about global climate change because he uses a cell phone.
TexasMommaWithAHat
(3,212 posts)Comparing a cell phone to four residences (one at least 7,000 square feet), traveling by chartered plane, and vacationing on an enormous yacht?
If I had that kind of wealth, you can bet I would enjoy it. I don't begrudge him his wealth or his enjoyment of it. I'm sure I'd be living in a luxury house, but that doesn't mean my footprint would have to be so huge.
Call it by whatever name you want, but it's still hypocrisy.
Dustlawyer
(10,495 posts)He was asked why didn't he give up his cell phone and his car. He pointed out that those things are straw man arguments. He would be less effective fighting for changes that need to be made by governments. He replied that he would be happy with the mandate of 40 mpg for all cars or mandated electric cars, as well as Solar Power to use to charge that phone. He said we live in a time where that is how we communicate and travel, but changes made on a macro scale will change how we all live. It doesn't have to be a change for the worse, just different.
As Leonardo said, the time is past for individuals to make changes to stop negative climate change, it must be the governments who must make changes in how and what we do as countries.
(Paraphrased)
TexasMommaWithAHat
(3,212 posts)And, yes, most of us use cell phones and travel by car, but that is not the same thing as traveling by chartered jet and maintaining multiple large residences. Does he not realize what message he sends when he drives his Prius to get on his fuel guzzling chartered jet?
I get it. It's inconvenient to be rich and famous and in a hurry and have to wait at the airport to fly first class. I also get that most of the fossil fuels we use are precisely for convenience, so why should others give up their conveniences? How many minds will he change? Hypocrite don't change minds. They preach to the choir.
Dustlawyer
(10,495 posts)behind the climate change cause. The type of change he is calling for is on the macro level, government mandating a certain fuel efficiency for cars, carbon tax, solar and wind subsidies and ending fossil fuel subsidies. These and other similar things could do what we need to make dramatic cuts to our carbon footprint. Would he be more effective if he had one house and no private jet, yes. Would it be better if he just shut up and didn't try to help, no!

(3,212 posts)are hard to pass without the backing of ordinary Americans. We need to move minds and hearts by real LEADERS. And, no, they don't have to walk around in sackcloth, ride a bike, use solar cooking, and live in a tent, but they do have to show that they are willing to make some personal sacrifices in order to win the minds of folks who are on the fence.

(20,453 posts)Were any of us given the chance to "get" a message out, would we not choose an ambassador to get that face time? He reached out, and his message was the one to deliver there. He's a UN ambassador.
I'm thinking that his 7,000 square foot home should not exclude him from delivering the message, but it hits a strange nerve among some chuckle-heads, I guess.

My Message to Harvard Kennedy School Grads
Posted: 05/28/2014 6:20 pm EDT Updated: 07/28/2014 5:59 am EDT
The following speech was delivered at the 2014 Commencement of the Harvard Kennedy School, where I was previously Anna Lindh Professor of the Practice of Global Leadership and Public Policy and the Founding Executive Director of the Carr Center for Human Rights Policy.
...Now, I tell you this story because while I have a serious message for you today, my more personal appeal is to stay open to all that is around you. Professionally and personally, you never know when lightning will strike.
