A violation of Probation for a D.W.I. and it took over 150 officers from over 18 agencies and military vehicles with more than 50 bombs of tear gas to end this like this
A standoff with police last week in Danby ended with a man dead, a home destroyed and a family left to pick up the pieces.
Rev. Ed Enstine, the pastor at the Danby Federated Church, said his church and community have come together to pitch in funds in support of the family of David Cady, who died during the standoff. Enstine said the church already donated $1,000 from their emergency funds, and are working to raise more.
"It's just amazing an amazing, swift and dramatic change in somebody's life," Enstine said. "To see how disruptive it is, is quite astonishing. Every time you see things like this you kind of shake your head and go 'gosh, I hope that never happens to me or anybody else I know.' But it does."
For more than 60 hours police surrounded the Cady home at 127 Hornbrook Road when David Cady, 36, refused to surrender to an arrest warrant presented by Tompkins County Sheriff deputies at around 7 p.m. Dec. 30. On Friday morning, police determined Cady had died inside the home. Results of an autopsy are pending.
He is survived by a wife and two children.
Hours after police ended the standoff, the house was condemned. As part of the siege, police used armored vehicles to damage the house's exterior walls to increase visibility and to persuade Cady to surrender.
Danby Code Enforcement Officer Matt Cooper, who was called to assess the damage, said Monday that the damaged walls made the home unlivable. A sign posted outside the home called the structure unsafe and prohibited to be occupied.
During the already scheduled Chicken and Biscuit Dinner from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at the Danby church, there will be a place to donate funds. A relief fund has also been set up and anyone interested in donating can mail a check to the Danby Federated Church at 1859 Danby Road, Ithaca, NY 14850.

(111,367 posts)That looks like what a fire department would do if tear gas caught the place on fire. No scorch marks or water damage, though.
I can's see anything that would provoke that kind of carnage except a gang of cops hopped up on steroids and with military hardware they were itching to try out.
It will be very interesting to find out what Cady died of.
The police need to build Mrs. Cady and their children a new house.
ETA: self inflicted gunshot. Odd since the same article said there was only one shot fired during the "standoff."
His guns look like hunting rifles to me. This didn't have to happen. My opinion of the cops in this case hasn't changed.

- Yes Reverend, I'm sure you do hope it doesn't happen to you or anyone you know. I mean as long as you don't know them, what they hay?

(37,454 posts)The Danby man who barricaded himself in his home last week had an arsenal of weapons on hand and no intention of being taken to jail, according to the Tompkins County Sheriff's Office.
David M. Cady Jr., 36, barricaded himself inside his Hornbrook Road home on Dec. 30 after Tompkins County Sheriff's deputies tried to serve an arrest warrant around 7 p.m. For three nights and two days, law enforcement officers surrounded the home, broke through walls and used tear gas to get Cady to surrender.
Autopsy results released Tuesday show Cady died of a self-inflicted gunshot during the armed standoff, according to the sheriff's office.
The sheriff's office said it learned Cady was not willing to go to jail, and that he had been traveling to Pennsylvania to purchase ammunition in preparation for a possible standoff with police. Cady was known to possess weapons, and during the standoff, he could be seen moving throughout the house carrying a long gun, according to the sheriff's office.

(459 posts)that he killed himself. That is bullshit. That he owned an arsenal, is most probably made up. That evidence has been tampered with, we will never know for sure. What we have witnessed is a police caused crime scene, a fact. Using anything military is escalating here in this country and what is crawling beneath the surface. Our constition doesn't allow our military to march against American citizens, but arming police with this gear is NOT okay. We the people need to stop military equipment in our neighborhoods.

(2,672 posts)The cops should just say, "We'll be back", and when they leave they should wait at a distance for however long it takes and nab the suspect when he decides to flee. But, since the cops are power hungry and they have new toys they want to show off, they have to put on a show off power as if to say, "Don't fuck with us".

(50,983 posts)I don't know about NY, but in Ohio law enforcement officers frequently escape any responsibility when they drive drunk. The ones that answer for their crime are never subjected to anything like this. WTF!

(11,175 posts)It's like Rand Paul (I think he was the one) saying that Eric Garner died because of cigarette taxes. All we have to do is repeal the law that the police were enforcing.
There should be laws against drunk driving, and violators should be arrested and punished.
When there's a warrant for someone, regardless of the charge, the police should enforce it, but should do so in a manner that's reasonable under the circumstances. If you want to argue that that standard wasn't followed in this instance, fine, but it's not a basis for repealing the underlying law that Mr. Cady had violated. (He had pleaded guilty to DWI -- his second conviction.)

(1,917 posts)Drunks shouldn't drive. Cops shouldn't be able to test everyone's breath just to be sure. That's a problem that has been created by the extreme ideology of groups like MADD.
Watch the TV. These new ads aren't directed at drunk driving. They're directed at ANY alcohol level.
And they'll make it a felony and it will follow some poor schmuck forever.
THAT"S absurd. Trying to prevent a crime before it happens.
As I said, the law makes harassment of individual liberties easier for the cops and that's wrong.
Jim Lane
(11,175 posts)You oppose the prohibition on drunk driving because "the law makes harassment of individual liberties easier for the cops and that's wrong." Well, any criminal law makes it easier for corrupt or bigoted or incompetent cops to harass individuals. I must concede that, if we were to repeal all criminal laws and disband all police forces, that would end police harassment. Call me a fascist but I don't think that's a good solution.

(1 post)When the police arrived to serve the warrant, bench warrant for David Cady for violation of probation based on a dirty piss test from months prior, Misi Cady, his wife told the deputies that David Cady was suicidal and that Jail scared the hell out of him. This is according to both Misi Cady and Officer Young of the SWAT TEAM. David Cady requests to speak to the Sheriff. The deputies were never able to contact the Sheriff. They never called the Sheriff's home, just left him some sort of message non urgent on his cell phone. The Swat Team was called, Elmira Police Dept. was called along with every agency within what I would consider a 3 to 4 hour driving distance. Still the Sheriff is not contacted, the man in charge of this investigation and whatever you want to call it, "Operation One Way or Another." The wife is already out with the two boys. No shots have been fired. A few hours past and it is getting dark...someone decides there should be spot lights on the house of the suicidal man who is afraid of the police. We now have about 40 officers outside his house. Let's turn on those spot lights. Lights come on..David Cady is very upset by this and yells out as he fires a shot which officers claim hits 20' away from the location of a officer and patrol car. He wants the lights off. None of the robots work that are placed inside the home...maybe because of the family dog? By the time the police enter the house after taking it apart with their equipment...the Coroner received David's body according to his wife frozen solid after being in a warm ambulance for 3 hours. Do you think maybe any of this could have been avoided if someone would have phoned the Sheriff's home and got him on the scene immediately instead of calling the SWAT TEAM. David was asking for contact with his wife when he come out of the home...this was denied to both David and his wife who have been together for 17 years without incident. Sheriff Ken Lansing stated last night he had the right to use DEADLY FORCE! Now Misi Cady and her two sons ages 9 & 11 are homeless without any of their belongs because so much tear gas was thrown into that house that everything has been poisoned by the gasses. She has financed David's funeral expenses and there is no insurance to cover any of the destruction that Tompkins County Sheriff's Department has caused this family.
