"Cenk Uygur (http://www.twitter.com/cenkuygur) host of The Young Turks discusses the recent trip some of the TYT team and he took to the struggling city of Detroit.
Among the many things that Cenk and the gang encounter included burnt out homes, long deserted factories and ruined husks of once great public structures. The city that gave us the automobile is slowly trying to recover from the blight and financial problems that have plagued the once thriving center of American industry for decades. But not all was darkness and ruin. There is also a strong and dedicated group of avid viewers of the TYT network as well as a growing attempt to repair the once great city."

(5,902 posts)And it will collapse if Rapepublicans regain the White House.
The dirty little secret of the modern U.S. economy is that a lot of it runs on money laundering - especially in places like downtown Detroit. You'll see this play out in things like real estate holdings consisting of buildings with 60%+ vacancy rates, inviable retail chains and mall holdings with billions in fictitious revenues, and other "investments" that are little more than shells that exist primarily to provide cover for many billions in laundered funds, both foreign and domestic.
These activities have created millions of jobs, and effectively keep the lights on in thousands of commercial properties that would otherwise have been abandoned long ago. Their indirect effect is likewise indispensable to the well-being of many communities across the nation. But their usefulness hinges on one thing: faith in the dollar, viewed by foreigners as the safest, most convertible currency in the world. If the dollar ever fails, though, all that would simply stop. God forbid.
