1.4 million 10th graders are taking an exam that will mostly decide the rest of their lives. If they don't pass the exam they stop getting education. High tension.

(23,946 posts)There are no "grades" in India, this is a standard, annual general language skills test, math and science are two others, for 10th Standard Board Of Examinations for advancement to limited government provided higher education slots.

(23,946 posts)there is insane competition for eyeballs. Eyeballs looking into the country will find it all even more insane.
The pressure on kids and parents at these Entrance and Placement standard testing is immense.
The final grades will determine admission into limited public and free spaces in the public colleges and universities and technical institutes and are either state or nationally standardized.
A ticket to a higher education..... heaven.....or no ticket and assigned to the hell of the common man in India.

(182,802 posts)Clearly they will do anything for their children (who wouldn't ?) but this is so extreme that it must indicate the stakes. Your post confirmed that. Thanks.

(182,802 posts)...they can be convinced to scream at buses full of children CHILDREN whose parents aren't striving for great heights for the kids they just don't want them to die in the streets. Great point jtuck.

(15,882 posts)But I remember the police (back when they had spines instead of guns) and fire dept and everyone else trying to keep the kids separated, with their racist parents egging them on, buncha scared black kids at the Dairy Queen across the street.
It was safer in the Navy.
This was in Oklahoma City, in a district which only elected Democrats, where a Republican couldn't get elected and very likely would get shot at.
And those kids grew up to be the ones in charge and retiring these days. They taught their kids the same things, who taught their kids...
Would have been a different place if they had been more worried about helping them become more capable of living in the world.
