Miss Philippines Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach Wins 2015 Miss Universe -- Steve Harvey initially named the runner up as the winner. Now that was awkward.
Very awkward.

(5,751 posts)My wife and I both said "we were right!" when he said it, as we predicted Philippines. I wish the clip would have started earlier so I could verify that.

(5,751 posts)He said "Miss Universe 2015 is" ... then looked at the card "Miss Colombia!". But the card said:
The first runner up is Miss Colombia.
Man, Steve Harvey must feel like shit. And the poor Colombian woman - she didn't even speak English and had no idea what was going on. That was quite the cringe fest.
Thanks for that!

Steve should have said, "The first runner up is..." instead of "Miss Universe 2015 is..." before looking at his card. So basically, he flubbed his line -- THE line, that is. Well, mistakes are for learning from -- which means that Steve Harvey is now a genius.

(5,751 posts)I think he was thinking emmys and oscars where they announce the winner. He should have just read the card - which he admits is how he screwed up.

Then it wasn't a mistake on Steve Harvey's part -- it was an out-and-out fuckup because he either misread what was on the card (inexcusable because he had at least 20 seconds, and because as a game show host, he reads cards for a living) or he just plain flubbed the one line he couldn't flub ("I've always depended on kindness of giraffes" ). Mistakes and accidents do happen; fuckups are mistakes and accidents that SHOULDN'T happen.

Variety:Harvey went on to say sorry on his Twitter, writing, Id like to apologize wholeheartedly to Miss Colombia & Miss Philippines for my huge mistake. I feel terrible. Secondly, Id like to apologize to the viewers at that I disappointed as well. Again it was an honest mistake...I dont want to take away from this amazing night and pageant, he went on. As well as the wonderful contestants. They were all amazing.
He tweeted a similar apology earlier, but misspelled the names of both countries, so the message was quickly deleted.
Well, it will make a great question on the next Family Feud...

I really couldnt believe it, I was so upset. For me Miss France as the real winner, she said in an interview uploaded to (a) Facebook page... I was very happy for Miss Colombia because she really deserved it. Im really not happy with the result and so are the other girls, Im sorry to say it...Because no one of us voted for Philippines. Im so sorry to say it.
Some messages came across we were not too happy to hear about. Some people blamed us for the comment Miss Universe Germany, Sara-Lorraine Riek, has given. We just want to make clear that THIS STATEMENT does NOT REFLECT OUR POINT OF VIEW - not of the event and of course not of the beautiful winner Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach.
We are actually crowning Miss Germany only based and organized here in Germany. We are not sending germany´s delegate to Miss Universe pageant...Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach is actually half German whereon we are really happy about and proud of... CONGRATULATIONS, PIA!
Read 'em and weep, Steve -- oh, and here's a consolation prize: your screwup stopped Colombia from winning Miss Universe two years in a row. And may I suggest that the Miss Germany Corporation replace Ms. Reik with HER first runner-up?

You. Have. Fucked. Up.
GossipCop:
...After Miss Philippines was rightfully crowned as the winner (and) the host repeatedly apologized for the flub...(s)ocial media...became flooded with memes and gifs poking fun at the situation...One such meme played off (Justin) Biebers hit song 'Sorry', which features the line, Is it too late now to say sorry?
...As it circulated on Twitter and Instagram, Bieber...re-posted it on his own Instagram page. The singer wrote in the caption, Its so sad but this is too funny had to post no disrespect. The post has since amassed more than 1.2 million likes.
No, he meant no disrespect, just enough worldwide ridicule and publicity to push Sorry into the #1 hit single slot, resulting in saying goodbye to Adele's Hello. At least somebody might come out of this a big winner...

(44,576 posts)Trump tweeted on Monday morning..."Very sad what happened last night at the Miss Universe Pageant. I sold it 6 months ago for a record price. This would never have happened!...Thats a different tune from the night before, however, when he tweeted out, @MissUniverse final 3 on now. Great people, great new owner @IMG. WATCH.
You know, things happen, its live television, and the new owners are tremendous people, he said (to Lauer)...(He) didnt point the finger at Miss Universe host Steve Harvey, who took full responsibility for the on-air blunder. It was a tough event, and you know what? Steve Harvey is a terrific guy, and things like this do happen, Trump said.
That's as nasty as he got? Considering that Trump would have had every right to pile on the pageant, no one would have blamed him for running a victory lap with cleats on:
Trump, who announced last week he is running for president as a Republican, said in his kick-off speech that, if elected, he planned to build a "great wall" on the border and make Mexico pay for it because Mexico is "sending" immigrants who are rapists, drug dealers and criminals.
This did not go down well at Univision, which serves millions of Mexican and Mexican-American viewers. "We will not be airing the Miss USA pageant on July 12th or working on any other projects tied to the Trump Organization," the network said on its website.
Maybe he's finally starting to listen to advice from his presidential campaign advisers to tone it down. Maybe he sees it as a way to mend fences with Hispanics. Whatever Trump's motivation, I'm sure the pageant is relieved that he's left such a relatively light footprint!
