the same way post-WWI Germans glommed onto ignorant, racist Hitler. When the smoke clears - should we be around to tell the tale - they will all feign ignorance of the darkest intentions.

I no longer put the onus on the figurehead - I point right back at the base that empowers him/her.

3. I've said for years that anti-semitism isn't an essential ingredient of National Socialism-

-only Hitler's version of it. Like any other right wing movement it merely requires an identifiable enemy. In Weimar Germany it was the Jews and the communists.

I remember how distraught the right wing was after the collapse of the Soviet Union. All those years of cultivating hatred and paranoia, and now, suddenly, nothing to focus it on. Nobody was happier about 9-11 than the right wingers in this country- They all heaved a sigh of relief at being returned to their comfort zone; a perceived existential threat. The Clintons just hadn't been cutting it in that regard.

Now they have the messiah they've been waiting for.
