“Young Greek women are selling sex for the price of a sandwich as six years of painful austerity have pushed the European country to the financial brink, a new study showed Friday.

The study, which compiled data on more than 17,000 sex workers operating in Greece, found that Greek women now dominate the country’s prostitution industry, replacing Eastern European women, and that the sex on sale in Greece is some of the cheapest on offer in Europe.

“Some women just do it for a cheese pie, or a sandwich they need to eat because they are hungry,” Gregory Laxos, a sociology professor at the Panteion University in Athens, told the London Times newspaper. “Others [do it] to pay taxes, bills, for urgent expenses or a quick [drug] fix,” said Laxos, who conducted the three-year study.”

The Allied military leadership fiercely protected its soldiers from paternity claims and child support payments, whether their relationships had been love, rape, or a common trade -- sex for food. Many commanders sent home soldiers whose girlfriends turned up pregnant. Others sped up the transfers of men who applied for permission to marry their German sweethearts.

Abortions Skyrocketing in Greece, They’re Being Used for Birth Control During Economic Crisis

Abortions in Greece have risen by 50 percent during the financial crisis, according to information presented at the Panhellenic Conference of Family Planning this October in Athens, the news outlet Ekathimerini reports.

Births, meanwhile, dropped by 30 percent, and miscarriages doubled, according to the report.

"Many women give birth here and then just leave the hospital, leaving their child here for us to look after.

"One reason is that there are mothers who believe they can't bring up their child so they leave them here.

"The other reason is because of the wave of immigrants. They use Greece as a bridge to go to another country. They're pregnant, have a child, and then just leave."

These children are the human consequence of the economic crisis: Greece's unwanted children, abandoned because of a crisis that began before they were even born.
