TYT: How Oregon Militia Member Died

Militia member LaVoy Finicum was shot and killed by police during a traffic stop. How he died is the cause of a lot of speculation. Cenk Uygur and John Iadarola hosts of The Young Turks break it down.

Do you think the police were justified in shooting LaVoy Finicum? Let us know in the comments below.

“With his shaved head and soft voice, Robert “LaVoy” Finicum resembled a monk — albeit a monk wearing a Stetson and packing a Colt .45 pistol on his hip.

And like a monk, Finicum waxed poetic when asked earlier this month whether he was prepared to die rather than go to jail for occupying a federal wildlife refuge in rural Oregon.

“Absolutely,” he told NBC’s Tony Dokoupil on Jan. 5. “I have been raised in the country all my life. I love dearly to feel the wind on my face, to see the sun rise, to see the moon in the night. I have no intention of spending any of my days in a concrete box.”

What Oregon Militia Standoff Says About American Culture

The standoff in Oregon is heating up. Arrests have been made, and one member is dead. But what does this situation say about American culture from a historical perspective? Cenk Uygur and John Iadarola hosts of The Young Turks break it down.

Do you agree with Cenk? Let us know in the comments below.

“As law enforcement moved in on Wednesday to contain militants who have occupied the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge for weeks, a broadcast from inside the refuge showed angry militiamen promising a “bloodbath.”

A live video feed from the DefendYourBase YouTube channel, showed several militants operating a large excavator. At least one of the militants was dressed in military-style gear and carrying a rifle.

“The media has been ordered to leave, and that means they are coming to kill us and they don’t want them to see that!” the man yelled into the camera. “They’re going to murder all of us and the media are cowards.”

“The media has been waiting for a bloodbath this whole time we’ve been here!” he exclaimed. “Now, there’s going to be one and they’re told to run? Because the feds don’t want them to know who is murdering us!”

Eric Garner, Tamir Rice, Trayvon Martin, Jordan Davis and all the other unarmed people police and gun toters have shot.

6. Suicide by Police pretty much covers it, sadly.

Indeed.

Suicide by police is a huge factor in gun nut culture.

8. That was my point as regards Finicum. Gun culture is full of death in "heroic" situation myths.

It makes no difference to me if they need see themselves as "heroes" or not. My dad's favorite uncle was the real Cowboy these wannabes could never measure up to. He didn't require stolen glory to be a good man or decent human being, nor a .45 caliber strapon to prove his strength, or dozens of slave boys to pay for his comforts.

the movement he helped lead." (from Wash Post link in OP.) Martyr? I don't think so. Certainly not a Robin Hood, who stole from the rich and gave to the poor. Finicum died performing a criminal act -- attempting to steal from the US Taxpayers and keep it for himself. He will soon be forgotten. Already this Morning, I had difficulty recalling his name.
