The south is riddled with poverty because of all the goddamn repuke governors. Look at Mississippi, poorest state in the country as well as the most red.

but back then the Democrats allowed Jim Crow and African American voter suppression in return for White Southern Dem votes.

Then came the Civil Rights Act and the Voting Rights Act.

Before that legislation, a sly bargain was in effect, as LBJ observed:

"If you can convince the lowest white man he's better than the best colored man, he won't notice you're picking his pocket. Hell, give him somebody to look down on, and he'll empty his pockets for you."

I'm sure there are many other reasons too, but it was helpful to hear your take on the reasons why people switch to Republican. Too much money to be had.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/88_%28number%29
In white nationalism
Neo-Nazis use the number 88 as an abbreviation for the Nazi salute Heil Hitler.[3] The letter H is eighth in the alphabet, whereby 88 becomes HH.[4]

Often, this number is associated with the number 14, e.g. 14/88, 14-88, or 1488; this number symbolizes the Fourteen Words coined by David Lane, a prominent white nationalist. Example uses of 88 include the song "88 Rock 'n' Roll Band" by Landser, and the organizations Column 88 and Unit 88. Currently, the Michigan-based ANP uses 14 in its domain name and 88 as part of a radio sign-off

The giant celtic cross on her other hand is a very common "white power" symbol: http://www.adl.org/combating-hate/hate-on-display/c/celtic-cross.html?referrer=https://www.google.com/#.VurHI_krK70

Pops had a few that looked suspicious as well.

Nothing but a family of racists.

I just e-mailed Newshour about this. I think it significantly impacts the story and should have been included.

I'm from NC and this video is spot on about too many of us. It's sad, disgusting, and what's so frustrating is that you can not get through to these people. It's even true that many of the people here who have decent jobs and more education still vote Republican. It often boils down to the fact they don't want to give handouts to what they call "deadbeats." Or that they don't believe in abortion and think the government is trying to take their guns. It's sad, NC is a beautiful state with mountains, beaches, beautiful landscapes -- scattered with rundown trailer parks. I'm so glad I can come to DU and interact with reasonable people who take time to think.

I always think of what George Carlin said, that most of the people who are against abortion are the people you wouldn't want to fuck in the first place -- same with the white supremacists, they'd be the last people you'd want to have a kid with.

https://www.facebook.com/grace.tilly.7

I can't think of a reason why you'd like the page of a out and about white supremacist if you weren't one yourself.

Her husband Farron "liked" "Certified Whiteboy Clothing", which I hoped against hope was tongue in cheek ironic but after seeing the page it was pretty obvious it was white supremacist propaganda:

He also liked "Nordic Beauty" and "I love being white", and lots of anti-government far-right militia type ideology.

It wouldn't surprise me if there was more than one racist Grace Tilly in NC, though!

Tattoos. And the bikes. If you're poor, do you really need those bikes? Sell the bike, and you can get almost two years of a public college education out of the way. At least, they talked about sending the kids to college. Not sure that's really in the mix.
