TOONS: Just in case you thought corporate funding of campaigns is a NEW thing...

A blast from the past.

(These are taken from the Teddy Roosevelt website. Ironically, The Bull Moose was the last president to take on the Wall Street trusts (monopolies) until NOW! Surely we can do better than ONCE PER CENTURY when it comes to making sure corporations are good corporate citizens?)

William Jennings Bryan, a Democrat populist vs. McKinley, Republican

"The Republican National Committee spent a staggering $3.5 million (equivalent to $3 billion in today’s money if calculated as a share of GDP), while Bryan and his backers spent only $300,000."

With that kind of disparity in spending, only one message got out. The Republicans successfully catapulted the propaganda.

And what's hard to believe is that all the libertarians (including those hiding in the GOP) want us to go back to that system by removing all restrictions on business.

Speaking of which, why does nobody enforce the anti-trust laws that were brought in around the turn of the century that were specifically designed to prevent mega-corporations from controlling American politics.
