2. Just wait until these corporations start TAKING AWAY "EARNED" vacation time....

Right now, these corporations are paying money for "work" they AREN'T getting. Some GOP a$$ is going to finally notice this and the employers will stop offering paid vacations...especially with unions going out of style.

It is just a matter of time and remember you saw it here first

4. They're already chiseling at the edges with "PTO."

"Paid Time Off" is all put in one bucket. No separate sick days. Which has the immediate and obvious effect of encouraging people to come in to work sick, rather than give up what would otherwise be vacation time.

They won't stop pushing until people push back.

He really is becoming like George Carlin, except much funnier. The line about spending time with brain damaged people was classic.

got that much vacation time....ordered by the govt, no less!

I don't get much vacation time, but it's too late for me, really. But let's make sure we keep Democrats in office everywhere for a good long while & see if we can't make things at least a LITTLE better for us, the working class.

6. It's a shame, because mandating a minimum paid vacation time for Americans would actually INCREASE

productivity.

Not to mention the significant boost in tourism income. I believe Alan Grayson wanted to propose a minimum vacation bill, but it went nowhere.

But everything is always thought in the short term. How much income can people (AKA economic units), produce in the shortest amount of time possible.

7. What he said is so true..

I remember working for one company, who allowed you one weeks vacation after working two years... or three weeks after working four years. You had a choice of taking that vacation or being paid for it, while working. Most people could not afford to take a vacation, s o they just worked though their vacations, and got an extra paycheck at the end of the month. That money went so fast towards food and bills... no one could even enjoy the extra money.

People were also afraid to take a vacation because many were afraid when they tried to come back, their job would be gone to someone else. The company was like that.. they said you could have a week off, but you didn't dare leave them short...or you might lose your job all together.

8. Best example and starkest contrast
Thu Jun 21, 2012, 12:46 AM

Because my wife is European and our children were born in Europe, they have dual citizenship.

One of our daughters lives in the States and gets nine, count 'em, NINE days of paid vacation at her meagerly paid (for her location) job. She sometimes begs (successfully, at least) for the right to take an extra unpaid day so she can visit us and her grandmother, who cannot travel long distances any more. I pay for her air fare to Europe and back. Her sister has moved back to Europe. She has a stressful (well-paid) job, but gets 29 days of paid vacation, which she is REQUIRED to take so that she doesn't experience burnout.

A contrast can't get much more glaring than that.

9. A dear friend

is a Federal judge and has a generous vacation allowance. He's been in his position about 20 years and has accrued 4 months of vacation time. He can take time off whenever he wants except for the fact he's expected to process and render 2 judgments a day or approximately 40 per month. He has hearings almost every working day and has to plow through hundreds of pages of medical reports before writing his decisions. Social Security keeps very close track of cases processed, so if he wants to take July 5th and 6th off this year, he'll have to go in and work 2 Saturdays to stay on track.

At this point, he's considering not using all the days he's entitled to and just taking the cash when he retires. But he's exhausted and very burned out, and I wonder what kind of physical and mental shape he'll be in before then.
