Kevin Smith’s Hilarious Tale Of The Prince Documentary You Never Saw

The entertainment world has been reeling over the last 24 hours over the death of Prince. Among the ‘hot topics’ surrounding his death has been the multitudes of Prince recordings that are unreleased. Many have speculated about how many gems might be in Prince’s archives. One guy who might have a better clue than most of us is writer / director Kevin Smith.

Apparently several years back, Prince was impressed with Smith’s movie, Dogma. Prince decided to contact Smith about making a documentary for him, on the topic of religion. After several rounds of phone tag with the superstar, Smith agrees to go to Minnesota and meet Prince. After arriving, Smith begins to realize he is in way over his head and attempts to get out of the project. He tells Prince’s assistant that the project isn’t for him. The assistant takes Smith aside and explains to him that he can’t do that. The assistant explains that Prince doesn’t comprehend things like a normal person, he lives in his own ‘Prince world.’

Smith asks whether the star is ‘being an asshole’ and Stephanie the assistant explains that he isn’t but he just can’t comprehend that someone can’t fulfill a ‘simple request’ like getting him a camel in Minnesota. It’s just ‘Prince.’

Smith then tells Stephanie he will go in and tell Prince himself that he can’t do the project. That plan lasts less than two seconds as almost immediately Smith folds and asks Prince ‘how he would like to do this thing?’

From there, Smith tells a hilarious tale of his trials and tribulations in making this documentary:

1. Funny.

I heard on sports radio today that Prince was a hell of a basketball player. In one instance he rented out part of his house to a movie crew. Prince decided he wanted to play basketball which screwed up the filming. Supposedly Prince just brushed them off and kept playing. He said, "you all can keep your money". They of course had to break everything down and scout out a new location.
