OP
Thanks.I suspect your right. I know there is a lot of territorial jockeying going on in some areas of Jerusalem, but I'm way too ignorant of the specifics.

Well, I've found a more definitive statement. McMaster was right to evade that question.

I have to admit that I am not familiar with the reference as Western Wall, instead as the Wailing Wall.

it's the other part that is in contention. I don't know if that's true, but the guests were all in agreement that western wall being part of Israel is not something that is in disagreement. Except to the extent that some don't acknowledge there is an Israel at all, I guess.

"However, the international community, including the United States, does not recognize Israel's annexation of east Jerusalem, which the Palestinians seek as the capital of a future independent state. The Old City is also home to the Al Aqsa Mosque, the third-holiest site in Islam.
The rival claims to east Jerusalem lie at the heart of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. They've often sparked violence.
McMaster's brief comment appeared to be consistent with long-standing U.S. policy that the status of Jerusalem is an issue to be decided in negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians."

He obviously thinks he's talking about the "Wailing Wall".
