He was one of the guinea pigs in the Nevada desert who got to march off to ground zero soon after the bomb went off and the mushroom cloud was rising into the sky. They were told not to look at the flash, but they were unprepared for the intensity of the shock wave.

"The military was interested in knowing how the average foot-soldier would stand up, physically and psychologically, to the rigors of the tactical nuclear battlefield."

Too many of his fellow soldiers died of cancer and other diseases associated with the experiment.

He DID die of cancer, but that was 43 years later, and all of his siblings died of cancer, too, so who knows?
