What is circular thinking and is this a trait found in narcissists?
Circular thinking, or circular reasoning, is a logical fallacy that argues using a premise and a conclusion that are the same. X is true because of Y, and Y is true because of X. This is sometimes referred to as begging the question.
Anybody can use shoddy circular reasoning that proves nothing, but narcissists certainly are prone to such nonsense as a way to avoid “being challenged or questioned, or to ‘win’ a debate by sending it round and round in circles,” to quote Urban Dictionary.
Narcissists specialize in flawed logic, contorted truth, evasiveness, and distraction. They do this to manipulate, control, and at all cost pivot away from responsibility or accountability. They also do it because they often do not think clearly and lapse into primitive “reasoning” when feeling threatened, which is a common state of being for them because of their intense vulnerability and projected cynicism about the motives of others. Instead of using sound reasoning to seek shared truth for the benefit of all, they resort to slight of hand or just plain irrational bullying: “I’m right because I’m RIGHT!”
