George Lincoln Rockwell (1918-1967) the Illinois-born, post WWII founder of the American Nazi Party was media-savvy, pipe-smoking and blatantly racist, homophobic and antisemitic. In 1962, after the US and allies had defeated Nazi Germany in 1945 Rockwell tried to hold a rally celebrating Hitlers birthday in NY.
The American Nazi Party (ANP) is a far-right American political party with its HQ in Arlington, Va. Rockwell founded the organization as the World Union of Free Enterprise National Socialists (WUFENS), but renamed it the American Nazi Party in 1960. Since the late 1960s, a number of small groups have used the name "American Nazi Party" with most being independent from each other and disbanding before the 21st c. The party is based largely upon the ideals and policies of Adolf Hitler's Nazi Party in Germany during the Nazi era, and embraced its uniforms and iconography.
Shortly after Rockwell's assassination in 1967, the organization appointed Rockwell's second in command, Dep. Comd. Matt Koehl as the new leader. The American Nazi Party, now under Koehl's command, was subject to ideological disagreements between members in the 1970s and 1980s. Koehl relocated the group's HQ from the DC area, eventually to scattered locations in Wisconsin and Michigan. After Koehl's death in 2014, Martin Kerr assumed leadership and maintains the New Order website and organization. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Nazi_Party https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Lincoln_Rockwell

(128,905 posts)Marlon Brando gave his only television acting performance in "Roots II: The Next Generations" (1979) portraying George Lincoln Rockwell when he was interviewed by Alex Haley (portrayed by James Earl Jones) for Playboy Magazine (when Haley worked as a writer for the magazine interviewing a number of notable people during the '60s). It netted him a Primetime Emmy for "Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited Series or a Special".
But what is more interesting is that when hunting for this link again (which I have posted on DU a number of times before) the comments by white supremacists and their ilk on youtube for this video and on the various other clips of this (as well as sites that that showed up in the search results associated with Brando's performance) have exploded exponentially. I.e., they apparently just discovered this (since the 2016 election) and had quite a bit to say to bash it.

(41,131 posts)So its popular again, no surprise. James Earl Jones always great, saw him in Othello and met him at a BBC event.
Rockwell, an orator and a showman reminds me of Jim Jones, a bit more reserved. What a character and founding 'father.' Years ago we drove by the Arlington HQ across from Georgetown, I barely remember.

<snips> WAPO. Shortly before noon on Aug. 25, 1967, a pale 58 Chevy pulled into a shopping center in Arlington. Out stepped one of the most hated men in America. As the founder of the American Nazi Party, George Lincoln Rockwell had hung swastikas on the Mall and picketed the marches of Martin Luther King Jr. He had called for shipping blacks to Africa and sending millions of Communist Jews to the gas chambers all at a time when memories of World War II were still fresh.
Now, dressed not in his Nazi uniform but a simple white shirt and dark slacks, Rockwell grabbed his dirty laundry and headed into the Econ-o-wash, only to realize he had forgotten the bleach. As he climbed back into his car to return to Nazi headquarters a large house a block away dubbed...

It's ironic, but not surprising, that one of his own went after him.
