(4,642 posts)but the biggest problem here is poor education and poor management, low pay.
I'm sure the video showed the worse problems they ran into, the officers who blatantly broke rules should be fired, fine or imprisoned. Its a thankless job, they deal with all kinds of situations every day, most, I'm sure, do their best to serve their community. There is a club mentality, protect their own, watch each others back and sometimes their lives depend on that closeness. I'm not a cop, aren't friends with any cops but we need to understand their side also, work with them to fix problems like this, more education, better pay goes a long way but in this no tax, you're on your own capitalist society there is little money for protect and serve.

(4,079 posts)BUT...Bad cops don't do anyone any good. Not even their fellow cops. They absolutely should be tested, and if they fail that test, they either need to be corrected or fired. I have no sympathy for the cops who are trying to "circle the wagons" to protect cops who are clearly not following procedure.
I myself have tried to file a complaint against an officer. It was years ago, and I had no idea how to go about it. I ended up calling and telling the person I was connected to what the problem was, and he took it and hung up. Now, he never got obstinate or anything, but I also never heard back about the complaint.
I get it. It's a thankless job. They have to deal with the worst of the worst in our society. But they sign up for this. No one is forcing them to become cops. I am constantly thankful for the bravery and good work of good cops, and I have told them so. I have had cops go out of their way to help me while off duty, and I've known cops personally who have put themselves in harms way and been injured in the line of duty to protect me and my community from harm. But the last thing I want, and the last thing THEY should want, is to have a cop next to them who doesn't know the basics of policy and procedure, or worse, intentionally breaks the rules and the laws to keep other bad cops from getting into "trouble".
I don't disagree with you necessarily, but I don't think cops deserve their co-officers' loyalty or protection when they have clearly broken the rules and/or laws.

(26,286 posts)start at 18 bucks an hour and I would hardly classify that as low pay.
elmac
(4,642 posts)that seems like good pay unless rent is 2000 + a month, raising a family, ect I would bet that most of the problem areas have lower wages. If they pay that much I would bet they are putting more money into education, recruiting.

(1,201 posts)were virtually non existent. To Cops the law is what they tell you it is and if you irritate them they will make you pay for it. They used to be called 'peace officers'. Now they want to put everyone in cuffs to make us all helpless to complain Seems good, kind cooperative people don't want to be cops mostly because of the people who are cops

(4,642 posts)and the internet to catch them in the act. Its always been a good ol boy club for the most part and has always been a struggle of good cops vs bad cops. Maybe robots will do a better job some day.

Thanks for posting it.

(12,503 posts)to weed out the type of cops seen on the video, and hopefully weed out the quick draw cops lusting for a kill. Higher pay means higher cost for the taxpayer, but that is what it will take to get quality staff.
The local State Police Dept is prosecuting troopers for fudging time cards stealing unearned overtime pay. And some are senior staff, so paying low is no bargain.

(4,079 posts)Just like with teachers. Higher pay will attract higher quality workers, and workers who are motivated to do well. We don't do ourselves any favors by nickel-and-dimeing these kinds of public employees. They do hard, often thankless work, and they deserve our respect when they do it well. As for those who do it poorly, see my comment above.

(546 posts)While not all police officers are bullies, bullies seem to gravitate to that profession. It would seem that they love the power. Or is it that power changes otherwise rational people and they find that they like being bullies. Think of the Stanford Experiment.

(22,794 posts)If the police aren't going to monitor themselves, citizens need to do it. But it clearly takes some courage to even request a complaint form in many cases.

(26,325 posts)Hes a cop watcher I follow on YouTube.
He sued the Fort Worth police in a case that set precedent removing qualified immunity from police if they arrest for public photography.
A 2015 encounter with Fort Worth police outside an east-side police substation, however, is having a far-reaching impact after the federal 5th Circuit Court of Appeals earlier this month used Turners case to clear up any question that videotaping or filming police activities is protected by the First Amendment.
The ruling comes at a time when police activities have been under close scrutiny, with videos like the one taken in the Jacqueline Craig case in Fort Worth going viral and turning a nationwide spotlight on police conduct. Fort Worth police officer William Martin was suspended for 10 days after cellphone video showed Martins questionable behavior while arresting Craig and her two daughters.

The cop watch community is fascinating to me as most of them are right wingers who just recently realized cops are out of control. They realized this when President Obama was in office. Of course, they blame President Obama. Some even think mr. bounce their heads off the police car trump will save us all from police abuse. Seriously.
