He has basically found a new and effective way to treat cancer. This is done by marking tumors so that the immune system attacks them. Part of what makes cancer so deadly is that cancer cells and tumors multiply and are not stopped by the body's systems. Allison has basically established immunotherapy for defeating cancer.

Allison came out of the blue for the Nobel. Usually the Nobel winners come from the same Ivy League network of upper echelon scientists. Allison did not have that pedigree, did his research out of the University of Texas. He has done extraordinary work, though.

Not only will he continue his work aided by Nobel Prize winnings and other awards (Breakthrough Award); he also has created an entire new field of immunotherapy for treating cancer. There will be many more labs inspired by Allison working in this new field. This is hope for the world.
