(9,895 posts)Like so many things in this country, the things that REALLY matter - caring for the sick, protecting the weak and the vulnerable from the powerful, educating the young and comforting the afflicted - these get lip service and campaign slogans and then.....NOTHING. Not a goddamn thing. Forgotten. Overlooked. Line-item removal. Die in committee. No floor vote.
The fact that such an issue exists is sad and pathetic but worst of all its completely unsurprising. Our values are simply this - pay for as much government as you can afford to fuck the rest of the population out of government that they NEED.
The policies of this nation - in taxation, in military service, in government assistance, in legal protections - ALL favor the wealthiest and ALL ignore the rest of us. The government was long ago bought off, but the pandering and pretend concerns are all over the place. Tax cuts for the wealthy sail through and become law while healthcare for all is a toxic football and gets bogged down until almost everything gained is lost once more.
Education is always a popular issue - spending levels are discussed but RESPECT for the profession itself is widely absent. When it comes time to PAY the teachers, to SUPPORT them and their efforts, society is too busy sending selfies to itself or pictures of their food to each other than actually assisting the teachers, actually respecting their sacrifices.
This nation has been staggering for a long time. We lost our soul at Sandy Hook and we have been nothing more than a shell ever since. What is REALLY important in America?
It is NOT families.
It is NOT children.
It is NOT the sick.
It is NOT the elderly.
It is NOT the other.
It IS the rich.
It IS the power hungry.
It IS the bastards in Congress who turned service into careers.
It IS the greedy.
We are a shit hole country, no...I misspoke there...we are THE shit hole country. I am losing faith that we'll ever get it cleaned up again, especially since that horrific massacre at Sandy Hook changed NOTHING AT ALL. 20 Children slaughtered like livestock and a collective NOTHING? Fuck us all.
This made me cry. This makes me angry.

(14,173 posts)I understand not wanting to get back into the grind of daily shows. But I'd be happy with one weekly show. Even once a month. Something. The guy was irreplaceable when he left.

(115 posts)and was crying at the end too. Jon has been on this since September 12, 2001. He is right. This needs to be a standalone bill, and 70 years sounds right to me. Im calling everyone on the subcommittee to urge this. FFS 18 years, people.
