Supermarket Iceland's advert for Christmas has been banned for being too political.
The commercial, made with Greenpeace, features an animated orangutan and highlights the destruction of the rainforest by palm oil growers.
The advertising clearance body, Clearcast, who screen broadcast adverts, deemed that the film breaks rules banning political advertising laid down by the 2003 Communications Act.
Earlier this year, Iceland became the first major UK supermarket to announce they are removing palm oil from all its own-brand products.
- Which Products Contain Palm Oil And How Can You Avoid It?
Iceland's founder Malcolm Walker said: "This was a film that Greenpeace made with a voice over by Emma Thompson.
"We got permission to use it and take off the Greenpeace logo and use it as the Iceland Christmas ad. It would have blown the John Lewis ad out of the window. It was so emotional."
The watchdog said in a statement: "Clearcast and the broadcasters have to date been unable to clear this Iceland ad because we concerned that it doesnt comply with the political rules of the BCAP code.
"The creative submitted to us is linked to another organisation who have not yet been able to demonstrate compliance in this area."
More than 890,000 people have since signed a petition calling for the advert to be shown on TV.
It's a British supermarket chain named "Iceland", not the country of Iceland. The confusion over the name is intentional. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iceland_(supermarket)

The best way to avoid palm oil is to check the ingredients list on the food and household items you buy. But be aware that the oil and derivatives of it come under many names, including the following:
Vegetable Oil, Vegetable Fat, Palm Kernel, Palm Kernel Oil, Palm Fruit Oil, Palmate, Palmitate, Palmolein, Glyceryl, Stearate, Stearic Acid, Elaeis Guineensis, Palmitic Acid, Palm Stearine, Palmitoyl Oxostearamide, Palmitoyl Tetrapeptide-3, Sodium Laureth Sulfate, Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, Sodium Kernelate, Sodium Palm Kernelate, Sodium Lauryl Lactylate/Sulphate, Hyrated Palm Glycerides, Etyl Palmitate, Octyl Palmitate and Palmityl Alcohol. An article on Ethical Consumer stated that the best supermarkets for not using palm oil, or that only used sustainable or organic palm oil, are Marks & Spencer, Sainsburys and Waitrose. Meanwhile, Iceland has said, By the end of 2018, 100 per cent of our own brand food will contain no palm oil. We are the first UK supermarket to commit to removing palm oil from all own brand food.
These products dont use palm oil:
Peanut butter: Meridian, Whole Earth
Ice cream: Ben & Jerrys
Chocolate: Divine
Margarine usually contains palm oil so opt for butter from Yeo Valley and M&S
Snacks: Hippeas, Nakd, Yoyo
Cookies and biscuits: M&S All Butter Cookies and all shortbread
Bread: Warburtons Danish White and all its gluten-free bread
Instant noodles: Kobuto Noodles
Soap: Lushs gourmet soaps
Lipstick: Body Shops make-up contains sustainable palm oil

(14,599 posts)smug, like we're really 'giving it' to the MAN.
But the only real solution, here, to my mind, is to vote the right people into office. That's it. I mean, look at how we live - all the plastic we use. All the gas and oil we use. We consume so much, when there are people who don't even have potable water. Who are starving.
Unless we elect people who have the courage to lead us into a sustainable future, we won't be having this conversation in 100 years.
We will be extinct.

(45,579 posts)There are some affordable options on this list. Look for sales.
Some of the mainstream brands will use different suppliers so they can't always be 100% certain to not have palm oil. Some suppliers straight up lie so there is always that risk.
When the FDA told us to avoid hydrogenated oils because of trans fats, a lot of foods replaced it with palm oil.
And a friendly reminder that palm oil is quite different from coconut oil, since DUers have been confused by that before. The tree is not chopped down to get oil from coconuts.
