When they plunged into "Shah Shah a-Go Go the place went wild.
Saw Gang of Four at Tyrones the next night- and REM twice on the weekend.

(28,794 posts)I've seen a bit of live music in my time but not that much, especially during the 80s. for one thing, it took me a long time to actually discover KROQ (the alternative rock station in LA), and for another, I had a bunch of kids and was poor. I saw Oingo Boingo and Crowded House in that time period. David Lindley, and Aswad. I think that's about it.

(41,758 posts)Saw U2 at a bar in Atlanta on December 8, 1981 for $4 - still have the ticket!
I think the concerts I referenced were between $20 and $30 a ticket and that was really a strain for me. I can't believe it was that cheap for you to see U2! You should take that ticket on Antiques Roadshow lol
I don't think you could step inside the Whiskey or House of Blues regardless of who was playing that cheaply. so apparently, then as now, it was more expensive in LA.

Here's a video from the SP's first gig in the US
At TCR 7:49:32:29 you will see a young Peter Buck (REM) and his then girlfriend Ann.
They tried to rush the venue when the SP took the stage - but told me later - at Wuxtry Records in Athens...
"They threw me out on my ass".
I had no tickets or transport to ATL that night - so I'm glad I stayed home

(3,427 posts)I always enjoyed his amazing organ solo on their cover of the Burt Bacharach classic "Walk On By." (The guitar solo is excellent, too.)
Well worth a listen if you've never heard it.

(28,794 posts)I only knew Always the Sun and it's one of my favorite ever songs. When I read about him though I did notice that Golden Brown was cited as their biggest hit.
