Maybe Bill Maher can use the applause footage. 
She called the virtual applause "hokey," too! 
By that I mean just about anyone who any of of us has supported or has representing them - from Beto, to Bernie, to Amy Klobuchar, to Andrew Yang, to Tom Steyer - and they all had inspiring and positive messages. The Republicans just don't have that star power - or the message. And Michelle Obama is incomparable.
Pence? McConnell?? Ted Cruz?! Yikes! And as for accomplishments to boast about - they're better off saying nothing. 
Everything Trump does - or says - is cringeworthy, but he has absolutely no awareness that he is. He's infatuated with anyone who praises him and values that above all. I have Mary Trump's book on audio to play in my car and just listened to the very beginning today on my way home - and it's even more disturbing than I anticipated, but enlightening. 
Let's face it, even in the 'best of times' there's lot of cheese at political conventions.
And I know what you mean, I've heard some of the nominations and the flowery speeches they use to make them. And, of course, knowing that they're on TV, the speakers want to make a memorable impression.
And I have a memory of having taken part in a presidential convention when I was in elementary school. I had little clue what was going on nor memory of who was nominated, just that I represented the great state of Virginia - and I'm in New York.
