Yes they are- born and lived the bulk of my life in a 'red state' - and yes as a female you are 'suspect' and if you are not a fundy x-tian you get harrassed. I have known of peoples homes, vehicles etc being vandalized, in some cases even pets have been murdered in mutliated by these upstanding 'god fearing' christain types. They do not seem to realize three things
1) the civil war is over
2) they were manipulated by wealthy plantation owners and are still being manipulated
3) the religion they cling to is a religion soley based on hatred, and is a tool for the current plantation owners to use to manipulate them.

they have not had the education and proper(ish) upbringing I have had.

My mother and brother live in northern VA and while their command of the english language is a bit better they would agree with these folks being tea party fundies themselves. I grew up around them yet escaped. (Always thought they were mean and not so bright)
