Or could it be just how far out of the closet you've gone?
The old school Strom Thurmond, Jesse Helms, Pat Robertson types sounded like they were out there but somehow straddled that mythical line. At times it can seem more a case of semantics in public than substance. Those who obscure their pernicious beliefs in hidden agendas and discrete meetings appear to harbor less obvious dangers, and the MSM can better pretend they are only part of the spectrum rather than the extreme.
Joe McCarthy and Roy Cohn were too much, but those who operated in the shadow of their excesses by continuing their works in lasting company and government policies were not?
