Rachel Maddow looks back at how the phrase "purity of the ballot box" in the Texas constitution was used as the basis for excluding Black Americans from all-white primaries, and shares video of Texas State Rep. Rafael Anchía calling out Texas State Rep. Briscoe Cain, Republican chair of the Texas State House Elections Committee, for including that phrase in the new Texas voter suppression bill. Aired on 05/07/21.

(202,192 posts)And I discovered that State Rep. Rafael Anchía who challenged this nasty little bigot did a follow up with Ali Velshi. I thought that Rachel's segment was very well done, was glad that she brought it up and explained the history so well.
Rep. Schools Republican On Racist History Of Purity Of The Ballot Box - The Last Word - MSNBC
State Rep. Rafael Anchía went viral when he delivered a history lesson to the Republican author of the voter suppression bill that passed the Texas House today. Rep. Anchía tells Ali Velshi, We have to live up to the best ideals of this country, and were not doing it here in Texas.

(35,711 posts)I don't think he really knew the history at all. He's a young guy who his side thinks is intellectual, then was outed for not doing his homework for the state. Not looking into the use of "purity" in the TX constitution.
That's typical of Republicans. Whenever they can't sell "just joking" they claim they "didn't know."
You can claim he knew, but I'll take him at his word because now everyone knows better than he what he's done, intended or not.
So now we know TX racists are surging back to try to codify their racism.
It's not like TX Latinos don't know that.

(2,946 posts)Efforts by Republicans to wear the mantle of intellectualism usually make them look like clowns. Being an intellectual involves really learning about things before shooting one's mouth off - something Republicans seem incapable of doing.
they're capable of really learning, but that mantle looks real to their audience, those who donate and vote. We're not their audience. When we are, we still outthink and outwork them.

(85,639 posts)the look on the the lady's face behind the questioner? (Sorry I can't see his name right now to spell it correctly)
Staying busy, head down, but when looking up, showed restrained contempt.
Did you see her that way?

(85,639 posts)Lifting a verse from the bible or something. I think he expected to be able to insert the language he was instructed to insert and was assured he wouldn't have to defend it because nobody was supposed to challenge it.

(35,711 posts)racist policy written right into the TX constitution. Just in case someone in the future needed it. Codified racist voting policy. The DOJ needs to take the TX constitution to SCOTUS and have it changed to fit the U.S. Constitution. The civil rights division could handle that.

(2,686 posts)I think his actions were motivated exactly as he said they were. And thats the problem. This young creep is racist without admitting it to himself. And so ignorant were his responses to Rep. Anchias excellently worded questions that they made my back teeth hurt and my nose and mouth conspire to create a subvocal snarl
He is an example of the breed of America the GOP wants as its legacy: ignorant and smug. He claims to be including the language because its right there, in the Texas Constitution. Why is it there? Duh, I dont know, he says. What the . . . this little squirt lacked the curiosity to even read the damned document he quotes from? To fathom its history, to understand and either embrace or excoriate the racism implicit in its words?
Texas, this is your future. I weep for you and your many millions of genuine intelligent, American citizens -- which is to say Democrats, Independents, and others who care about truth and honesty. Sadly, it is the worst of you that are in the ascendancy today.
And, yeah, he does have a punchable face. Best way to do it is to take him to a good Texas saloon and whisper in the ears of the heavy drinkin Texas true-men there that the little bespectacled boy-man at the end of the bar favors gay rights and is a devout follower of flag-burning Marxists. Then quietly exit through the rear door and listen for the resultant chaos as he is beaten unconscious.

And not that I'm actually a violent person, but that is a lovely fantasy to consider. I'd buy tickets for that, and I'm a card carrying homo.
