Even after 23 years of living in the U.S. I've still got traces of me old Black Country accent. Am yow orroight? Ar, am orroight!
I love origin stories. But, despite the difficulties like the one above, you have to admit that the accent has worked well for you at other times.
When I first emigrated, and for many years afterwards, people would often say "I love your accent!" after hearing it. Fortunately for me, while people can almost always identify what country an accent is from, they're not so great at differentiating between regional accents.
This meant that I was able to thank them for the compliment without feeling the need to mention that a nationwide poll taken a few years earlier had determined my particular regional accent to be "Least employable in the UK."

I have to admit to having a terrible ear for differentiating regions. Weirdly, despite Canada being so vast, there are really only two accent types: Maritime/especially NFLD, and Other.
