The question about the origin of this virus is correctly discussed by Dr. Fauci. There are no data that currently indicate whether SARS-Co-V2 came directly from the "wet market" into people or from a accidental lab release from the Wuhan Institute of Virology. In either case, the virus is of zoonotic origin. It did jump from animal to human. It is my understanding that there are no genetic scars in the genome that would suggest deliberate manipulation to engineer a human pathogen.

That said, the Chinese could have collected bat material (i.e. blood, feces, etc.) during an investigation of bats as reservoirs of potential human pathogens and used those materials to isolate a variety of viruses. Then an investigator could have made an error that resulted in accidental exposure/inoculation of themselves. Subsequently, that person could have gotten ill and infected others. Pure accidental release - no nefarious intent. Looking for potential human pathogens in animals as the sources of future pandemic diseases needs to be done, but great care must be taken to protect everyone from the scientists to the population. This requires the development of robust protocols and cooperation and openness between local, national, and international health agencies. There needs to be a good investigation into what happened so we can significantly reduce the risk of this happening again - whether from a wet market or from a lab accident.

I am a microbiology professor with over 30 yrs of experience working with human and animal bacterial pathogens. The pathogenic species of bacteria that my lab works with now are infectious only to marine fish and marine invertebrates, but the principles are the same.
