Related: About this forumHow Prosecuting Trump Could Protect The Future Of American Democracy - Ali Velshi - MSNBC
A new piece by The Boston Globe editorial board argues the Biden Justice Department must act now to hold Donald Trump accountable for his abuses of power while in office. Abdallah Fayyad, member of The Boston Globes editorial board, says prosecution would restrain future presidents from abusing their power, and former federal prosecutor Glenn Kirschner says prosecution would show we will not tolerate a runaway, criminal president. (57,073 posts)We had dump, in large part, because Nixon was pardoned & others have been given a free pass because of their wealth and/or status. With no concern for retribution, grifters will freely grift. That's a given, imo.
Ty for posting.
Ps - officials should be held to higher ethical standards and punished more harshly, imo, because they are violating the public trust.

(205,317 posts)Not his siblings, 2 brothers and 2 sisters, just him. His father got him out of every scrape or legal issue he got into through either favors or money - a lot of money. So he went through life believing that laws, rules and norms just didn't apply to him. He was obviously a very damaged individual never suited for public office. He never even had a "real" job, just worked for his father, mainly doing whatever he wanted. It's long past time he finally faced consequences and it's likely that a real investigation will reveal transgressions that go back decades.

(5,897 posts)And how the evangelicals will react to him if that ever comes to light. I'm still amazed and disturbed at the nearly fanatical level of support he has among evangelicals.

(205,317 posts)The transgressions covered were mainly financial. But Mary Trump painted a picture of someone who was able to get away with everything, so none of us should be surprised at anything more that comes to light.
And I sure agree with you about the evangelicals. That makes no sense at all. If these are religious folks, why would they fanatically support someone who is not in the least religious, has never attended any church - and, as we have seen both when he attended George H.W. Bush's funeral and his more recent Bible holding photo op, he has no idea how to behave either in a church or even near one??

(5,897 posts)I'd much rather have Lunchbucket Joe in the White House than TFG. Joe cares about his family, and loves his country...both are alien concepts to TFG.

(205,317 posts)He lost his closest (younger) brother quite recently, but doesn't seem to be affected at all. And when his eldest brother died way too young (42), he went to the movies! So he has no concept of or loyalty to family - nor service to country. He grew up believing that it's all there to serve him. So it's impossible for him to understand someone who has dedicated his life to service like Joe Biden. TFG has never served anyone but himself.

(1,623 posts)...that advanced democracies truly comprehend the necessity of prosecuting criminal actions of their elected officials.
Here in the U.S. we seem to not take that as a serious endeavour.
We may have "jump started" democratic governance back in "1776", and might have had a substantial lead at the start.
Now the U.S. seems dead last in the race for democracy. Meanwhile, "wealth and power" have been pulling ahead forever.
Democracy = rabbit
Wealth and power = Turtle
Think about that...
Sorry, forgot to add the "Mc" in front of the turtle

(205,317 posts)Just the other night Rachel Maddow pointed out that leaders in other countries have been convicted for breaking laws and have served time - recently. That needs to happen in this country as well. Just because it hasn't happened before is no excuse. And, as has also been said, it needs to happen now to prevent it from happening again.

(1,623 posts)we both obviously live in the same dimension!
However, on my end, I still struggle to find the right way to post something that gets traction.

(205,317 posts)I'll think I've discovered a terrific find, only to have it sink like a stone. And the other night I hesitated to post something, but decided some would be interested, and it climbed right up on The Greatest Page. So you take your chances...

(6,820 posts)justice, the miscreants have no fear or respect of it. I refer to the irresponsible and unnecessary choice made to NOT convict Nixon for assuming dictatorial prerogatives. How much of our national milieu could have been avoided had Nixon spent a few months in prison?
It might be a good thing to exhume Andrew Jackson and try him for his crimes against humanity and civility. Our current southern border problems have their roots in his aspirational, ham-handed dealings with Mexico. He personally brought racism and cruelty to new heights of vulgarity during his exercise in presidential irresponsibility. The veritable template for todays domestic terrorists.

(111,255 posts)like wire fraud, money laundering, tax evasion, that sort of thing. If they can't get him that way, by then Biden will be out of office and perhaps they'll go after him for his crimes in office.
It takes a long time for dictators to be put away.
