I can perhaps laugh at his commentary more easily since I never dismissed those ideas about the lab.

And I'm a science fanatic too, but I agree with Stewart about the damage some of them can cause too. In fact, when I hear people boasting about how civilization is so much more superior to distant hunter-gatherer lifestyles, I think about how our "wonderful" nuclear weapons might change that perspective in a hurry. At least ancient humans survived for many hundreds of thousands of years. Does anyone really believe that we can just sit on nuclear weapons over that time frame? And that's not even considering other problems, like climate change.

3. Absolutely, although I think the problem is not with science...

I think the problem is not with science, but rather with human nature.

The best part is where Jon says the famous last words of a scientist before humanity is exterminated by something created in a science lab:

"Heh heh! It worked!"

He also makes a valid point that the first application of atomic energy was not to generate electricity for the benefit of all, but rather to create an atomic bomb that could still wipe out humanity. It really makes one wonder, no?

4. Another aspect of our "civilization" that's odd...

... to me is how scientists are rarely in control of their creations at all.

It's like, "Out of the way, eggheads! We're in charge of this stuff now! We could never grasp how you did it, but we're clearly most qualified to oversee it because of our people skills, or something. Invent protective force fields or something else useful, losers."

I sometimes think that even the agricultural revolution was a mistake, in terms of humanity's survival. If I could somehow go back in time and actually communicate with those people, I might say, "Sure, it's much more convenient than foraging for food. Heck, there's even markets to pick out whatever you want now, with labor more divided. But be careful, because people will spring up with justifications for their bigger cut of the goods than others. And they'll tell scary stories about invisible beings who might take it all away, and how you need to obey their guidance because only they can communicate with those entities to avoid such punishment. My advise is to banish them as soon as possible."

6. Miss Him So Much

He relentlessly and cleverly pointed out the stunning hypocrisy of the Republicans. You would think more of the moderate Republicans would have noticed that more.....and there is some hopeful indications that moderate non Trumpsters are finally defecting to the Democrats. Is it enough to...err “trump” the Republicans going foreword, blunting all Their tomfoolery in States.

Of course we need Merrick Garland to go after this attack on Voting by the wrong people. Oh and State legislators being able to reverse election results they don’t like.

We are up against it, that Orange Monster being able to put multiple people on the Supreme Court, thanks to McConnell’s stunning grinning hypocrisy.

There are comfortably more of us that them but due to institutional advantages to the Republicans we were at a disadvantage to begin with.

10. Disappointing

I hate to point out the obvious, but that lab had the same name as the virus because it was studying variants of SARS, which is 80% the same as the Covid coronavirus.

The truth is that we don't know where this one came from and might never know That pangolin variant could have been passed to humans mutating silently over a long time before the cluster of cases emerged in Wuhan.

Tjat "slaughter while u wait" wet market wasn't the origin of the virus, but it was certainly the first large scale victim of it

What we do know about that lab is that the WHO cited them for sloppy procedures and that they and the CDC had teams helping them tighten things up. So what did Dumdum do? Pulled the CDC out and tried to defund the WHO.

Stewart is feeding into his anti China bullshit. It is not helpful.

12. Mind you, I don't necessarily agree that Covid-19 escaped from the Wuhan Lab...

I'm just entertained by Stewart's presentation of the facts as he sees them.

And he is right about most scientists getting carried away by their research and creations and paying too little attention to the negative consequences thereof.

The most disturbing part of this covid pandemic is not the virus or where it came from, but how Trump politicized it for his own benefit, at the expense of taking more constructive steps to limit its spread and death toll.
