Fuck the anti-vaxxers and the anti-maskers.
They are no better than drunk drivers or people who fire guns into a crowd

(19,204 posts)that's extremely difficult to watch.
My daughter is terrified of sending my grandchildren back to school, even though we live in New York and the school system takes every precaution for the children's and teacher's safety.
I was debating whether to forward this to her, but I think not. After my own reaction I'm not sure it would sit well with her at all. We're already doing all we can. No sense in over alarming her. I'll keep it to myself, but she'll probably see it somewhere else anyway.

As a retired teacher and principal, I felt professionally and legally (the term is "in loco parentis" - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/In_loco_parentis ) responsible as a guardian for the safety and well-being of each and every kid that came through the front door. I worked in some economically challenged areas where sometimes over 1/2 of the kids came from single-parent homes - and the community itself was one that qualified for over 75% of the students receiving free or reduced breakfast/lunch.
SOMEBODY had to care for these kids - and way too often their only hope was the school. And to have some heartless, &%#*@!^% pea-brained politician put the kids' lives at risk because they want to gain points or votes with his 'followers' - well, that's NOT what America should be - and I can only hope that parents, teachers, and schools stand up and say ENOUGH!!!!

(19,204 posts)My daughter and SIL (he's a vice-principal in a different school district) were careful when purchasing their "forever" home. They wanted to be sure they settled in a district with great schools, and in as liberal an area as possible.
Great! But we discuss children growing up in school districts such as you described. My SIL's job is in a good school district, but the actual school is for "at risk" children from all over the county. Every district sends their "at risk" children to this one school, and that includes one city with around 500,000 inhabitants. I truly don't know how he does it.
He describes children in households that have one parent, and that one parent is addicted to drugs. Some of the stories he relates are worse than that. And you're 100% correct when you say, "SOMEBODY had to care for these kids - and way too often their only hope was the school." Quite often, it is.
We all feel guilty about sending our kids to the best school district around, but then having to help these children from horrible school districts cope with the distressed reality of today's America.
Yeah, it tears you apart. 🥺 As your CV demonstrates, you know what I'm talking about, and I certainly know where you're coming from.
We do the best we can. We all donate money and time when we can, but there's never enough. I feel so bad some nights it's hard to sleep. I can't imagine what my SIL goes through. He's a saint.
Take care, MyOwnPeace. It's nice to discuss these matters with someone who's "walked the walk".
