In May, the CDC made a decision to reduce tracking and collecting data on breakthrough infections to only those involving hospitalizations and deaths -- leaving a big gap in understanding the impact of variants as COVID-19 cases surge across the nation once again. Jessica Malaty Rivera, an infectious disease epidemiologist and research fellow at Boston Childrens Hospital, and former science communication lead at the COVID Tracking Project joins. Frankly, when CDC announced their decision, I knew breakthroughs would be ugly, and here we are.
Shortly thereafter, Israel released numbers that were not great...
And here we are.
Eager to get my third dose!

(206,112 posts)That's one excuse that sends me over the edge, those who are anti-vaxx because it wasn't sufficiently "tested." There not only were there trials, but these vaccines have been in the works for decades, during both the AIDS epidemic and SARS after that. And the Pfizer is likely getting FDA approval on Monday, Moderna likely by the fall. What will their excuses be then??

(206,112 posts)Within the year, I walked into my dentist's office and was shocked to see Fox News was on the TV in her waiting room. Now, my dentist is "one of us," as is her assistant - in fact I sometimes show her DU on my phone. Her assistant apologized, said that their previous patient, an older lady, had requested it. *sigh* But my point is, what they were still talking about in the 30 seconds I watched it - were Hillary emails!! That's all they've got!

Yup, that's all they have.

(206,112 posts)It's usually some "neutral" channel, like one of those that show refurbishing houses. But I know her politics since we've discussed it - and her 20-something assistant feels the same way. I've gone to the same dentist since the '80s, and she's treated and knows most of my family. But I never knew her politics, never thought to discuss that with her - though I was actually in the dentist's chair on 9/11! She had the TV on CNN and I kept seeing that second plane hitting the WTC over and over! I walked out of there afraid the world was about to end and that was a wake up call to start really paying a lot more attention to what was going on in the world.
I eventually found DU (early 2003) and I've certainly learned a lot here. And I once mentioned that I'd been in the dentist's chair on 9/11 and whoever I replied to asked me if I'd ever discussed that with my dentist. I hadn't, so the next time I went in, I brought it up. And that's how I found out that she's a serious Democrat and we've often discussed elections and the state of the country ever since.

(206,112 posts)I voted on my way home. My dentist, on the other hand, had to use a provisional ballot, since she wasn't on the rolls when she went to vote - and she hadn't moved and voted in the same place she always had!
