(14,853 posts)I watched as my older brother (7 years older) dumped the entire bowl of candy in his huge bag (a pillow case) as I protested that he shouldn't do that!
He ignored me and we continued on our way, wearing me out because he ran from house to house and I was supposed to stay with him.
I later snitched on what he did to my parents, like he'd committed a terrible crime with the bowl of candy, but they didn't care. And I later got some bruises from my brother for trying to cause trouble for him.

... but there used to be people (often elderly) who would hand out a single penny to the trick or treaters.
And the "wax lips" people. Ugh!
Edit: Everyone just thanked the old people since they had big smiles and were pleasant while handing out the pennies, and the kids later speculated that a penny was actually worth something a century ago... when we estimated that they were kids themselves.
