WHO Says Omicron Variant Is Not "Mild" As ER Doctor Describes New COVID Wave Overwhelming Hospitals

- Jan. 7, 2022. We look at the skyrocketing number of COVID infections. Coronavirus cases hit record highs this week, with global cases climbing 70% from last week to 9.5 million and the U.S. reporting a single-day record of 1 million new cases on Monday. In the U.S., the extraordinary volume of cases is filling up emergency rooms nationwide and exhausting healthcare workers, says emergency room physician Dr. Craig Spencer, who has been treating coronavirus patients since the pandemic began.

“We’re much better at treating this disease now,” says Spencer, “but the problem is that the amount of volume that we’re seeing threatens to really wash away any added benefit from either a milder variant or even all that experience that we’ve learned and those tools that we’ve built up over the past few years.” Spencer also critiques the U.S. government’s role in prolonging the pandemic, saying, “Global vaccine inequity has been one of the most profound and disappointing aspects of this pandemic over the past year.” (DN! I've read accounts here on DU that sound anything but "mild."

Why health officials would link such an innocuous term to a potentially deadly, super contagious virus, with potential for long haul is beyond me.

Along with the recent rollout to send COVID HOME TEST KITS to Americans, why weren't Quality MASKS and N95 Respirators which we've had large supplies of for months also mailed to households? Bernie Sanders and other legislators have been advocating this for some time and for good reason.

Providing 4 masks to start with would familiarize people with the type and purpose, a very positive step in the effort to stop Covid spread and sickness. The mask mailing should include a clear, basic factsheet to inform and educate people about the types of approved masks and their function; counterfeits; CDC guidelines; and where to purchase quality masks, both in retail stores and online.

In the last several months the *CVS and *Walgreen stores where I've shopped all carry ample hand sanitizer, alcohol disinfectant, Pulse Oxymeters, and recently, Covid Home Test Kits. *But I've Never seen any N95 Niosh Masks or Respirators, only some flimsy, colorful cloth masks and neck gators displayed on racks. Not good.

a Republican. And my friend a nurse at Cleveland clinic said no one with Covid is on life support who is vaccinated so this article is deliberately misleading ...yellow journalism. Covid is all over Ohio and a good number of folks at my husband's job have or had Covid. the only one in real danger is a 35-year-old man who refused the vaccine for political reasons and has been sick for more than three weeks...everyone else was back within a week or two...and some felt fine but still had to sit out for two weeks...company policy.
