Last edited Wed Jan 12, 2022, 01:01 PM - Edit history (1)
1. Making Election Day (and the day before Election Day) a national holiday for all federal employees, giving them two days off to get their votes in. (This idea makes Mitch McConnell crap his pants. Witness the video below.)2. Automatically register all federal employees to vote, and issue them voter IDs, which all States are compelled to honour. (Basically a federal government version of ACORN's Project Vote.)
3. Register anybody who receives government benefits of any kind to vote, and issue them a voter ID card.
4. Give every federal employee the right to request a mail in ballot under the same statues that allow military families to request one.
Republicans know that federal employees (with the exception of the military) probably break about 60/40 for Democrats. Any executive measures like this, that give an advantage to Democrats would give Democrats LEVERAGE when negotiating voting rights with Republicans (or even Democrats like Manchin.).
Remember a few years ago when Democrats tried to make Election Day a national holiday, and McConnell responded with THIS pathetic speech. Thus proving that the idea scares him. If you're worried that giving EVERYBODY a day off to vote because it would allow federal employees to vote...then how about an executive order that JUST gives federal employees the day to vote. Don't like that? Well then you'd better mitigate it by giving EVERYBODY the day off.

(291 posts)Can you imagine in the last election if the Federal government certified the state electors?
I know this isn't directly related to registration, but the independence of the states to determine their own voting regulations help limit the Federal corruption that Trump attempted in GA and other states.
Next step is to mobilize at the state level to stop the Repub attempts to enable the overrule of voting results all together if they go Dem :/

(5,955 posts)Where the federal government could fill out all the forms, get signatures, and then submit them to the States the way ACORN used to do in Project Vote. This would also counterbalance voter purging by State governments. If the State purged names from the voters list, while the federal government was simultaneously providing proof that the person was alive and eligible to vote, that might work.

(7,412 posts)Its in the OPM regs, if the employees voting location isnt open three hours before or after their normal work hours they can get up to three hours of paid administrative leave to vote in person. My agency used to always send out reminder emails.
When I was a federal employee I used to go vote on the clock in the morning on the way to work. Then Florida got 7 days minimum early voting and mail-in voting, cant remember the last time I voted in person on Election Day.

(5,955 posts)...floor speech against it. It was from a time when Democrats were actually trying to make voting day a national holiday for everyone. Which, of course, requires legislation. What I'm suggesting would just make voting day a holiday for federal employees, which can be done with an executive order.

(1,927 posts)They can't be done via executive order. Only your first point is possible. And its only possible for as long as the Executive order is signed for it before each election. It can't be permanent without Congress actually making it a Federal holiday.
