2. The problem with NATO and the EU is their process to join.

Both are bureaucratic to the extreme. A country needs to align its policies and practices, governmental and military before it can be granted membership. And NATO/EU must dither, check and double check and all in a rather public way before any admittance is granted. Years go by. I wonder what would have happened, if instead, the application is made confidentially, and admittance is quickly granted, provisionally, that as long as you are working to the required alignments over a few years, you are in and, in the case of NATO, you are immediately under their protective umbrella. RU would have had no time to stage what it has staged. Not to say there could not have been a harsh reaction, like RU turns off the gas to the EU, but Ukraine may have been spared all this.
