Real Time with Bill Maher (HBO) - 4/22/22

Bob Odenkirk: Comedy Comedy Comedy Drama

Comedian, actor, producer and author Bob Odenkirk joins Bill for a conversation about his career and new memoir, "Comedy Comedy Comedy Drama."

New Rule: The War on Democracy

Democracy doesn’t die in darkness. It dies in plain sight because enough people think democracy is a luxury America can no longer afford.

Overtime: Caitlin Flanagan, Mary Katharine Ham

Bill Maher and his guests answer viewer questions after the show.

Here's a "bootleg" version of the show which includes Bill's Monologue (00:25) the entire interview with comedian Bob Odenkirk (7:45), entire panel discussion with Caitlin Flanagan and Mary Katharine Ham (19:55), Bill's "funny bit" (33:44), and includes the opening part of New Rules (44:25). It won't last long, as usual:

I'm still not in favor of eating in a public setting - since you obviously have to remove masks Rhiannon12866 Apr 2022 #2

said masks were pointless and uncomfortable. Yes, when eating masks must come off, yet they did help to keep people from dying from Covid...

I still remember seeing photos of Sarah Palin posted here - eating out in public with a group when she went to NYC for her failed lawsuit - while she had tested positive for Covid for the second time!

I also do most of my cooking and eating at home. Still don't trust public spaces. Shopping I always wear my mask. PCP, my mask is on of course. Hospitals without a doubt. This is not over yet. Republikans only use this issue to divide. They hate themselves and don't give a damn about us.

but of late it is just not that good. I do think he harps on the virus stuff too much and is all over the board since Trump left. There certainly is plenty of material being provided by the GOP but he seems intent on changing the discussion now to the Dems.

Wake up! Wake up!!

When, being vaccinated, he had no symptoms, but had to quarantine and skip two Real Time shows and postpone his comedy tour yet again. I agree that he definitely has a blind spot there, it's tough to believe that he knows no one who got sick, was hospitalized or died - but he may not.

He is too into his own shit. He mentions it all the time about how much money he lost by canceled shows, etc. It must be nice to be so self righteous and healthy when so many people got sick because of people like him. He is too self absorbed. Me, me, me. He really turns me off with this BS and I have not watched most of his shows over the last 2 years. I almost wish he did get seriously ill and suffered from long haul so he would get off of his high horse and have some empathy.

And I remember that he was definitely unhappy doing the show - in isolation - from his backyard (except when neighbor Jay Leno dropped by and was chased off for his trouble). He certainly resented not being able to go on the road - and his own experience with Covid didn't seem to affect him. With all the people he knows, colleagues, staff, etc., he must know someone who was adversely affected, but maybe not.

21 years and counting, more or less. From Bush to O'Reilly to Trump to DeSantis, it's just less funny than it used to be.

Give Maher some credit for trying something new (IMO there's been a little "George Carlin" to his act, minus the George). He's one of the sharpest minds in comedy. When it stops working he'll move on.

And I agree that he's still pretty sharp, he has more hits than misses in his weekly New Rules and gives us something to think about...
