(16,903 posts)Poor Vlad needs billions more to continue his quest. I wouldnt be surprised if he is responsible for all of this, the killing of the entire family, etc. You get my drift? Snort

(14,529 posts)I first realized how nutty Russia was when the Anna Politkovskaya story broke when I was in grad school..after that I noticed stories about how bad it was for journalists, pro-democracy activists etc. there.

Maybe that is why I have some sympathy for the Russian people (who are privately not on board with this stuff but not actively resisting). Because it sounds like it is a variation on the Handmaid's Tale world already there..it sounds like resistance is typically a death sentence..until Putin's regime is toppled at least. People's resistance gets worn down in places like those.

(205,486 posts)I was there in the late '80s, my grandmother joined a peace group that had a "sister town" in the Caucasus Mountains and she invited me to join them on their initial trip. And those we met were vehemently anti-war - as has been said, the Russian people suffered terribly during WWII fought on their own soil and there are placques and statues everywhere in memory of those they lost. Even in the schools there are museums to teach the next generations about the horrors they experienced during that war. I still remember one older woman who had served as a nurse during WWII who said to us "Please, when you go back, tell your president that we want peace." The mentality back then was "Never again." But it appears they have forgotten.

It was the mothers who broke the Soviet camel's back in 1990 or so.
Will "special operation" mothers break Putin? Or be the final straw?
When the Moskva was sunk, the Russian government officially stated that all (ALL) the crew members had been rescued from the ship. Now mothers of Russian sailors are asking where their sons are.

(16,254 posts)who are furious with Putin. I wish I could find them so we could check to see if these two are included in that bunch.
Apparently, Putin's group of "friends" isn't all it's cracked up to be. Putin just hopes they are on his side.
I would guess that there are a slew of oligarchs who are looking for some exotic place to hide until Putin is gone. They'll just have to find other transportation beyond their yachts.
I wonder how many live in the U.S.?

(36,081 posts)The worse sanctions get, the more Putin's assassins will have the oligarchs fall in line or die. Or the Russian kleptocracy and its mafia boss will keep up their cat and mouse games.
