2. I wonder if it will be honest about how those kids got into those schools

I've heard stories from tribe after tribe about how officials backed up by cops would go out and scoop up all the school aged kids periodically, sometimes notifying the parents, sometimes not. Those roundups of children continued into the 60s. The school here in town didn't close until 1981. Various plans were made for the property but a series of fires (indigenous lightning? wouldn't blame them) destroyed all but one building.

So I know survivors of the system and none of them look back on it with anything but sheer hatred.

Oh, they were started with only the highest ideals, to Americanize the American Indian---turn them into Christian white people with darker skin. To say it failed is a gross understatement.

I'm glad this shit is coming out, it needs to.

China is now following the exact same playbook with the Uighurs. It will work exactly as well.

4. Yes they are always referred to as survivors and not alumni.

Very telling. When your school has no playground and has a cemetery there is something wrong.

Search "industrial schools ireland" sometime. They started as places to train abandoned children in orphanages trades like lowest level mill worker or domestic service but expanded to poor children, in general. There was no education there, they were just rented out to various places that didn't want to pay adult workers. It's where the 11 year olds in the Magdalene Laundries came from.

Here's one of many articles: https://www.irishtimes.com/news/social-affairs/we-must-never-forget-terror-of-industrial-schools-1.1486047

They were overseen by the church, natch, and featured the unmarked graves instead of playgrounds. When someone finally got the courage to stand up to the priests and call for investigations, the priests ordered the records burned. Parents who had their children taken away for the crime of extreme poverty have no way of knowing what happened to them.

I've known a few of these survivors, too. If they could nuke the Vatican, they'd do it without any consideration for the rest of Rome.
