2. This was the interview I was looking forward to because I knew that Colbert would ask him why

He didn't speak out at the time - or much earlier. He said it was because he was the "circuit breaker" who would push back against TFG's dangerous and insane ideas and I can buy that. As he said, someone else, like truly insane Stephen Miller, was there at the time, pushing even more dangerous and insane ideas...

4. I meant the reason he didn't speak out when he was in the previous administration

He knew he'd get fired, which he did (For not being "loyal," sound familiar?) but at least we didn't bomb Mexico or shoot peaceful BLM protesters...

He refuses to use TFG's name, so has viewers send in "nicknames" which he uses on the show...

They can get by with the most direct "dagger to the heart" questions because they ask under the auspices of humor, not angry accusations. Plan to watch the whole thing later, thanks.

I thought that was very clear, see what you think. I think Colbert also got pissed very early on, when Esper said "I thought you were going to ask hard questions!" Stephen has always seemed extremely touchy about guests saying anything negative about his interviewing skills and so that didn't help. He's pretty transparent when he doesn't like someone.

He has to rehab his image so he can get his next million dollar defense contractor gig. Fuck him.
