July 4, 2022, marks a unique point in U.S. history – the nation has existed for 246 years, the same amount of time that slavery lasted first in the colonies and then the states after the Revolutionary War. Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and author Isabel Wilkerson joins MSNBC’s Lawrence O’Donnell to discuss the erasure of that history saying, “The vast majority of people of African descent who lived on this soil did not live with the freedoms that we connect to what it means to be an American citizen.” Aired on 06/30/2022.

Isabel Wilkerson: Justice Jackson Shows America's Potential - The Last Word - MSNBC

Journalist Isabel Wilkerson tells MSNBC’s Lawrence O’Donnell how she felt watching Ketanji Brown Jackson be sworn in as the first Black woman of the Supreme Court and how Justice Jackson, even though she’s joining the minority, can become the “conscience of the court” and advocate for those who have not had a voice: “She’s risen to this moment, the descendant of enslaved people… in a way that allows us to see what the potential of our country actually can be.” Aired on 06/30/2022.
