(4,291 posts)To see the portraits unveiled. To paraphrase President Biden, these portraits will be displayed at the White House forever.

(128,907 posts)at least for posterity's sake, and that was to show his intention to not only be "traditional", but to also reflect the seriousness and gravity of the office. It was in stark contrast to the more "fun" and creative National Portrait Gallery portrait!

(205,307 posts)Playful side in public. When I think of him, I remember him smiling - and playing with the dogs...

(128,907 posts)but I always considered his demeanor as "stern" - at least when it came to carrying out his duties.
This pic (in my sig) speaks volumes!
When "off duty", he was downright silly.

(205,307 posts)But when he was home, at least in public, he was a smiling good natured guy - except when he announced that bin Laden was dead, that was clearly his serious side.

(128,907 posts)That's why I think since this is the portrait for the White House, it represents his time there and as he noted, all the ups and downs and going to bed stressed about whether the decisions that were made were the right ones.
I think because he is naturally laid back, whenever he does get ruffled, it becomes a huge "signal" to back away as some may misinterpret his calmness as "weakness". It also makes his humor all the more hilarious because it is often unexpected.

(205,307 posts)Shoulders. But I prefer to think of him showing his lighter side and smiling - since he made us smile more often than frown, we didn't worry when he was in charge.

This still cracks me up -
