(111,255 posts)also take it away gets told that men didn't give us anything but a hard time and that we had to grab the vote with our own bleeding hands. My gradnmother and great grandmother were ardent Suffragettes. One of my mother's early memories was of a huge Suffragette parade in NYC with both of them. They worked, they marched, they wrote, they banged on doors, and they sometimes were assaulted and a few went to prison. Men who are ignorant of history need to be told these things, again and again, until they sink in.

(111,255 posts)I think she was all of four feet ten, was brought over by an uncle after her second husband had died, and set up in the racehorse business, owning a stable and raising them. My mother said she was tough as hell and wouldn't take any shit from any man who tried to pat her on the head and tell her to be sweet.
She got to cast that first vote in 1920 and it was one of her proudest days. She died soon afterward, one of the horses threw her. I would imagine that's how she wanted to go.
