A hen that lays an egg about once a day spring through fall will lay one maybe every few days in winter, egg production falls off a cliff. Hothouse conditions and bright lighting can help a little, but not that much, the hens know it's winter.

Add that to big culls of hens due to avian flu and increased demand, it's no wonder that prices have skyrocketed.

If you must bake someone a cake, look up Depression recipes online for eggless cakes. Skip the souffles and other egg heavy foods or source some powdered egg whites, they do work. Just know that once spring rolls around and production picks up, the prices will start to come down.
