(3,180 posts)having a PhD. Dr. Biden doesn't have a PhD, she has a doctorate in Education. Not the same. With that said, she has still earned the right to be called Dr.

(21,484 posts)is Ed.D when listed after the person's name. When used as a title before the name, it is Dr., same as a Ph.D.

(3,180 posts)The phD, generally speaking, is a much more difficult degree to obtain. And yes, the term Dr. may appear before both. But as far as the tweets were concerned, all most all of them referred to her as having a phD. That is not the case.

(21,484 posts)and the Tweets that called Jill Biden's degree a Ph.D were incorrect. But Ed.D stands for Doctor of Education and she is entitled to use the title of Dr.

(46,117 posts)Kelly (supposedly) earned a Juris Doctor degree from Albany Law School. That's a doctorate.
Just because lawyers/attorneys don't go around calling themselves "Doctor" doesn't negate the fact that they've earned doctorates.
On a side note, I didn't like it when Bill Cosby added either William Cosby, Ed.D. or Dr. William Cosby in the opening credits of his eponymous television show in the Eighties. He didn't earn that degree. The university gave him credit for life experience, since he lacked the requisite bachelor's degree, and allowed him to fulfill his practice teaching requirements while working as an instructor in prisons and appearing on Sesame Street and The Electric Company.
Cosby also made use of his TV career for his doctoral dissertation.
His doctorate was publicly criticized in 1985 by Reginald Damerell, a former associate professor of education at the University of Massachusetts, who had been among those who evaluated his dissertation. Damerell told an interviewer for New York magazine that Cosby had attended no courses other than "one weekend-long seminar."
But the university's acting dean responded, as quoted in People magazine, that Cosby's dissertation was a "very respectable piece of work."

(9,959 posts)... In education, we did not use the "Dr." title. You can get a doctorate is almost anything, and we did keep it to medical doctors. Our P.E. (Gym) teacher was a Dr, for example. I can see Megan's view, and it's one I shared. But, now, people use "Dr." so much, I think we're coming to a point where most people are not going to assume "Dr" means the person is a Marcus Welby. Also, we've had "Dr Laura" & "Dr Oz" & "Dr Phil" & "Dr Drew" help change the meaning. How can they be doctors? The term "Dr" has changed, or is changing, in the general public's mind. Probably, that's going to be a good thing.

(16,786 posts)One of my Art teachers was Dr.Gwynne. He had earned his Doctorate in Art related studies.
Another one of my Art History teachers in California was called Dr. Tansey. Along with her husband, they published an Art History book called Art Through The Ages published in late 1970. I recalled seeing that same book at the book store at Winona State here in Minnesota in 1976. Both Drs. Tansey had advanced degrees in Art History and related studies.
