With tanks checked off the list, Ukrainian leaders have renewed their public appeals for Western fighter jets, discussions of which were not officially on the agenda of a meeting between Ukraine and its allies in Ramstein, Germany, last week. CNN Sam Kiley is in Ukraine with the report.

Ukraine must be able to hit back @ Russia. I wouldn't blame them if they blew up the Kremlin.

(3,023 posts)Not as some fear that it will tick the Russians off more, their hatred for us is pretty much already white hot at the Kremlin I am sure. But the issue is that while the RU has largely fumbled up most of their ground game efforts to date, we should not assume that will continue indefinitely. Russia played this game in WW2, for different reasons, but basically used their advantage in manpower to stall the enemy while they built up ever more and more capable army and air force formations and equipment. The Ukrainians have done amazing to date, but while we can help with equipment and ammo to an extent, we aren't willing to put our boots on the ground and tilt the strategic advantage decisively. 300 or so first rate tanks and even a couple squadrons of Gen 4 or 5 attack aircraft just aren't enough and maybe even not be soon enough to avoid the Russians from turning the tide.

Ukraine's advantage is the same as that of the Confederacy: they don't have to win outright. They just have to hold on and harass the enemy long enough for them to lose the will to fight.
