(133 posts)This is what we call a hind cast where we're projecting back in time based on existing data sets. As you go farther back in time the quality of the data starts to weaken because the density of measurements over geography gets increasingly sparse. A good example are the oceans, one hundred years ago we did not have good sea surface temperature data in our mid ocean environments.
Something else that heightens the magnitude of the anomaly is that they shifted the baseline from 1961-1980 to 1951-1980.
It is worth noting that contrary to popular warming denialists beliefs, the first academic paper written concerning warming on a global scale was published in 1896 by Svante Arrehnius. In it he creates the first EBM or Energy Balance Model for the earth. In that model he predicts that if you double the CO2 in the atmosphere that the earth will heat between 2 and 4 degrees Celsius.
His projected time frame for the doubling of CO2 is very conservative but his prediction (with refinements on forcings) holds today.
Currently we are now looking at a potential heating of 6 degrees Celsius by end of the century which would put the planet into a hot-house scenario similar to the PETM or the early Triassic period.
