Heartbreaking!

A series of body cam videos shows Knoxville police ridiculing a 60-year-old woman Lisa Edwards, who was pleading for help while suffering a medical crisis. Dr. Rashad Richey and Jeff Wiggins discuss on Indisputable. Tell us what you think in the comments below.

Frequent flyers in the ER who are attention seeking, drug seeking, hypochondriac, or have Munchhausen's syndrome try the patience of all staff members. The staff knew her well and it looked like one of her routine emergency calls, so the doc signed off. Since she was often a problem, cops were called to assist her out of the building.

What else I hear (rather than see) is worsening speech. The cops probably thought she was drunk and the alcohol was hitting her harder. Uh, no, this was an evolving CVA and a quick neuro check would have turned it up. However, the doc had signed off on her, so she couldn't possibly have anything wrong that sleeping it off in a cell wouldn't cure from their POV.

It's just a sad situation. Chances are this would have been a fatal event even on a slow day in a huge city hospital with super advanced stroke treatment. However, she wouldn't have died while being humiliated.

Cops do need better training. I worked in one unit that had printed cards for people who had mostly recovered from stroke but had speech and gait problems, the cards saying "I am not drunk. I had a stroke." Feedback said the cards helped. Police need better training on how to differentiate drunks from diabetics and stroke survivors. Hell, they need better training, period.

until she got out into the parking lot and started to crash and burn there. Her speech was reasonably clear in the ER but became increasingly slurred as she tried to tell the cops something really bad was going on.

Just because somebody's a pain in the ass doesn't mean s/he isn't really sick. This was a rotten situation all around, the timing couldn't have been worse.
